New Orleans is a coastal city. Situated where the Mississippi River Delta becomes the Gulf of Mexico in Southeast Louisiana, New Orleans is strategically positioned for commerce; however, its location also defines its most existential threat. Due to coastal subsidence, south Louisiana is facing the highest rate of relative sea level rise in the world. In other words, our land is sinking and the sea is rising simultaneously. Geologists estimate that Louisiana is losing the equivalent of a football field an hour due to this reality. In addition, south Louisiana is vulnerable to heavy rainfall and destructive storms, which are increasing in their frequency and severity due to climate change.

Greater New Orleans Foundation Announces Over $1 Million in Grants to 28 Black-led Organizations 

January 29, 2021

Today, the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) announced grants worth over $1 million to 28 Black-led organizations as part of its Greater Together Fund for Racial Equity. These grants, funded in part by a $1 million investment from Facebook, support organizations that provide leadership in ending institutional racism, helping eliminate inequitable systems, and working to close the racial wealth gap. With today’s announcement, GNOF will have granted a total of $1.45 million under the Greater Together Fund for Racial Equity, as part of its strategy of raising and awarding a total of $3 million in multi-year grants.

Blue Krewe received seed money and other assistance from the Greater New Orleans Foundation. Blue Krewe’s board president is Dr. Corey Hebert. Its leadership includes Favre; Coats; former deputy mayor and current GNOF CEO Andy Kopplin; Destinie Hammond, the communications manager for the North American Bikeshare Association and a previous marketing manager at Blue Bikes; and Emilie Bahr, a writer and urban planner. All live in the New Orleans area.
