Effective Strategies to Manage Staff Transitions

In recent years, nonprofit leaders have faced a significant increase in staff transitions and the challenges that accompany them: work reassignments, staff restructuring, coaching needs for staff, off-boarding and onboarding staff, and centering organizational values in hiring processes. Smooth staff transitions are vitally important to an organization’s sustainability and impact, and nonprofit leaders oftentimes need additional capacity and guidance to support them through this time.
In this session, participants will be introduced to strategies and tools they can use to navigate staff transitions—planning for the transition, implementing the plan, evaluating and adjusting the plan while executing it, and shifting organizations to their next steps. We will explore effective internal and external communications strategies to engage and motivate staff, board members, and organizational stakeholders.
Participants will also learn how to navigate specific transition scenarios, such as transitions on an abbreviated timeline, unique aspects of executive or senior level transitions, and transition planning for remote employees.
By the end of the session, participants will:
- have increased knowledge on the key components of a staff transition plan
- have learned strategies on how to adapt and evaluate transition plans
- have the tools to navigate unique transition scenarios
