Linking Money to Mission

The Linking to Money to Mission workshop presented by the Nonprofit Finance Fund in April 2013 provided participants with an in-depth look at how to assess an organization’s financial operating performance. Participants learned how to discern the organization’s capacity and ability to weather risk and uncertainty as well as pursue opportunities. NFF trainers guided participants through audited financial statements and described how to analyze an organizations true operating performance to inform strategy and decision-making. From this, nonprofit leaders can better articulate their financial position internally and to their stakeholders, as well as make more informed management decisions. Topics covered in the workshop included:

  • Rules of the nonprofit world compared to the for-profit world; a better understanding of a nonprofit’s operating strictures
  • The nuances of nonprofit revenue (i.e. restricted and unrestricted revenue)
  • How revenue flows through a nonprofit organization, and how this informs assessing operating performance.
  • An organization’s balance sheet and what it says about adaptability and durability.
