Recent scandals have cast a pall over the charitable sector. But if you’re wondering about the wisdom of making a donation to some established charity in our city, don’t be fooled by the media hype. My guess is that ninety-nine times out of a hundred, your mailing that check will do our community substantial good.

What’s the line between public and private responsibility when it comes to providing healthcare, education, and other services for the poor? Is it the proper role of foundations to plug the gaps created by retreating public funds? In what domains should the government become your brother’s keeper? In public education? healthcare for the uninsured? food for the hungry?
