The Greater New Orleans Foundations’ Organizational Effectiveness Initiative is pleased to offer two free upcoming learning opportunities, Foundation Center Directory Online training and our popular Board Governance 101 workshop.

Foundation Center Directory Online

Prospect research is a critical step in fund development planning and grant writing. So where do nonprofits go to find new funding prospects?

The Greater New Orleans Foundation Organizational Effective initiative is proud to partner with the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) and Arts Council of Greater New Orleans to provide the Foundation Center Cooperating Collection for use by nonprofits and volunteers from across the region.  Foundation Directory Online provides the most current, accurate, and comprehensive information available on over 98,000 U.S. grantmakers and their grants, drawn from reliable sources, including IRS Form 990s, grantmaker web sites and annual reports, and the grantmakers themselves. The searchable database allows users to select key words to identify the grantmakers that are the best match with their organization and project.

The Foundation Center Directory Online training is on Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 9:00 – 11:00 am at the LANO Office located at 935 Gravier St. Suite 850, New Orleans, LA 70130. Greater New Orleans Foundation grantees will have priority for registration.

Nonprofit professionals and volunteers can access the database Monday-Thursday 9:00 am-3:30 pm at the LANO office located at 935 Gravier St. in New Orleans.  The database is only accessible on site. If you are a first time user or have not attended a workshop on using the database, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with Cory Sparks at corysparks@lano.org or 504-309-2081.  An appointment is not required to access the database.

Board Governance 101
Tuesday, May 19th    8:30 am-12:30 pm

Presented in conjunction with the Louisiana Association of Nonprofits (LANO)Board Governance 101 covers the basics all nonprofit leaders need to know about good governance including board member roles and responsibilities. Participants will receive tools and sample policies on proven practices that increase board engagement and accountability.  This workshop is restricted to executive directors and board members. We strongly encourage organizational teams comprised of the executive director and a board member participate in the workshop together. In this session, you will learn:

  • The Board of Directors legal, ethical, and ethical duties
  • The important roles and responsibilities to include in a board member job description
  • How to foster greater board engagement and accountability

The Board Governance 101 workshop is on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 8:30 am-12:30 pm at the Greater New Orleans located at 1055 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130. The workshop will be in Suite 120 on the first floor. Greater New Orleans Foundation grantees will have priority for registration. Click here to register for Board Governance 101.
