Health

OVERVIEW

For many people in our region, health care options have long been limited to visiting the emergency room or simply going without treatment. With little money, no health insurance coverage, and few choices regarding health care delivery, countless families and individuals struggle to attain the most basic level of care, while preventative treatment, screenings, mental health services, and health education remain out of reach.

We respond by investing in nonprofit intermediary organizations working to increase access to comprehensive primary care, preventative care and mental health care for all. We support groups that advocate for continued funding of community-based health care centers and initiatives that strengthen and expand this network of centers. We also support public health outreach and education programs and initiatives that provide opportunities for indigent residents to make better-informed decisions about their health care.

Through these efforts, we hope residents can receive better treatment for their health issues, and that early screenings, assessments, and referrals are broadly available across our community. Our goal is to help foster a modern, effective health care system for the New Orleans area that will improve health and quality of life for all in our region.

It is no surprise that Mayor Landrieu tapped Dr. Karen DeSalvo as the city’s new health commissioner. She’s a driving force in healthcare reform for our region’s most medically underserved residents. Read More >>

As founder of 504 HealthNet which brings together 17 organizations, DeSalvo and her team created a sustainable model whereby many uninsured and underinsured residents receive primary care at neighborhood, community-based health centers. When the doors to the centers were almost closed recently due to a lack of funding, DeSalvo worked collaboratively with various agencies to keep them open.

“We now have three years of sustainable funding. This was a huge success, because it was really the first time that we saw coordination between local, state, and federal government to say community health matters.”
