Eight Things to Know Before You Host Your Fundraiser to Benefit the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund

  1. 100 percent of all donations to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund will be granted to organizations working tirelessly in the effected areas. Our focus is to help fishermen and their families in the following parishes: Plaquemines, St. Bernard, lower Jefferson, Terrebonne, and Lafourche.
  2. Here’s a flyer you are welcome to use.
  3. The Greater New Orleans Foundations, administer of the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund, is a 501 (c) 3 organization. We have the highest rankings possible on Charity Navigator and we’re accredited by the Council on Foundation.
  4. Proceeds can be sent by check to: Greater New Orleans Foundation/Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund at 1055 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130. You will receive a gift acknowledgment letter for tax purposes.
  5. Want to create a presence on your website linking to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund? Click here for a sample feature box directing your partners directly to our site.
  6. Let us know what you’re doing! Email Juliana@gnof.org with the details and we’ll publicize your efforts through our social networks.
  7. Looking for language for a press release? Contact Martha@gnof.org.
  8. Please know that we are extremely grateful for your partnership. You are making a difference.

We have been getting quite a few questions from people who would like to:

  1. Send in one large donation/check with a list of names and receive individual tax acknowledgement letters for those names.
  2. Have people donate through our PayPal account and have us track and compile donations and let them know who donated.

Currently neither of these options is possible. Fortunately, there is a service through Razoo.com that will provide tax acknowledgement for individual donors.

To do this, sign up for an individual account with Razoo.com, set up a fundraiser, and designate the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund as the recipient of donations. This is a great service for people who are collecting pledges for a bike ride, donations for a wedding etc. or other relatively small amounts and would like to be able to keep track of who is donating in their name. The link to the fundraiser page is here: http://www.razoo.com/p/for_fundraisers

Thank you for your interest. We are helping fishermen and their families with economic and social services. For example, we’ve given a grant to the Southeast Louisiana Fisheries Assistance Center to help commercial fishermen with business assistance while they are unemployed. We’ve also given a grant to the Plaquemines Community CARE Center which provides counseling and emotional support to families to deal with the stress during these tough times. Please call Josie Everly at (504) 598-4663 if you have any additional questions.

Just want to let all of you at ‘GNOF’ know that my prayers, thoughts, and support is with ALL involved with the fishing industry, as well as those families who lost loved ones. The phrase >”what does not kill us will only make us stronger” rings so clear. I can’t imagine the devastion felt by those who depend on the Gulf Coast for their livelyhood. There IS a light at the end of this long, and arduous tunnel.
I was only able to donate a small amount to your ‘GCOSF’ at this time, but I hope nonetheless it will help to add to the aid needed.
When I am able to do more I will. I will also pass along your site “info”to others here in my area, and those out state.

May GOD bless you ALL !

Sincerest Regards……..

I work for a large thrift/resale nonprofit as a store manager. I was wondering if there is a need for rags/fabric/clothing? Any items like that or other small household items I can gather amongst my region to send?

What percentage of my donation would go to management and what actually makes it to the gulf cleanup?

GNOF replies: all donations to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund will be granted. The Greater New Orleans Foundation is not charging an administrative fee on this Fund.

are there funds for the other states affected?…it isn’t just new orleans

European Union Times warn toxic rains from Gulf Oil dispersant could destroy 1/2 N Amer. http://bit.ly/akaJpp @boycottBP and @boycottARCO

Most Americans don’t seem to understand that the entire future of the USA is at risk. The entire world is linked by our oceans and their currents. Now BP says it will be August before any attempts will actually stop the leak. Encourage your local news provider to report on the potential effects to your region. While it may take a while to reach your area, it will in fact destroy beaches and wildlife all over the USA and possibly the world. Write to your congress people at http://www.senate.gov and http://www.house.gov and demand action now.

If you could please give us some ideas on how to legally reach out to our community and help with the expence and help with the wild life.

GNOF replies: Dear Shiela, I am emailing you the information now. Many thanks for your help.

I know every little bit helps. I do hope my small donation can do something. This is so devastating to the entire eco system in the Gulf Coast. Makes me so sad but I know everyone is praying and so am I.

How do send a donation via PayPal?

One Photographer’s way of helping the beautiful birds he photographs! 100% profits being donated!
http://www.mattbangophotography.com/oil-spill

Is this a non-profit organization, and are donations tax deductible?

If donations can be deducted for income tax, aren’t you asking the taxpayers to subsidize what BP should be paying out?

I don’t understand why anyone would donate money to this cause! I understand everyone wanting to help the environment and people affected by this catastrophe, but BP is 100% responsible for all of the costs! Is there a plan in place to have BP payback all of these donations?

K Moore and Kathryn: As we learned after Hurricane Katrina and has been conveyed to us by community foundations in Alaska, it can take years, even decades, before suits are filed and settlements are made. The 2005 hurricanes caused $150 billion in damages, yet the federal relief was $45 billion in rebuilding funds, with an additional $25 billion in private insurance claims. Philanthropy helps to fill the gap. Over the past four years, our staff has leveraged close to half a billion dollars for our community.

Kathryn, that could take years, BP is dragging it out and making it as complicated as they can. People are suffering right now, and need help right now, so this is IMO a very worthy cause.

Did you see the game online http://www.plugthatwell.com ? lots of fun and donations go to GNOF. Try it out. who is Vurtu?

hi: i am a well experience mental health RN..wondering who i can speak with for voluteering my skills if needed.. bruce

I was provided with a feasible Solution in order to Effectively and Permanently if needed, Close-Seal the BP Oil Well.

Everyone appears to be thinking from the Top of the Well by looking for a solution by placing a “Cap” over the ‘Top’ of this Well. This is not what is needed…

The Only way to Effectively Close this Well is to insert an “Inverted Umbrella” through the Center of the Well and Open it at the Bottom at the Source of the Oil. The Pressure will Deploy the Umbrella and Seal it from the Bottom of the Well with enough strength as to allow the remaining Oil from the Wells Core and to be Replaced by Cement.

There are several capable Engineers who can effectively Design this Deployable Inverted Umbrella with enough Strength to allow Cement to be poured into the Well’s Core.

With your help, Richard, Bill, my Brother Jeffrey and Bram who may have the ability to contact several Government Officials in order to present this Strategy demonstrated by Carlos’ Automated Design. This “Inverted Plug Deployment System” can be Built fairly quickly in which NASA could possibly have one if these available from one of their Collapsible Satellite Antennas.

This is the only plausible approach in order to effectively stop this Oil by approaching a Solution from the Bottom of this Well and not from where everyone else is looking.

Congratulations James and Thank you for representing Millions of people just like you, who actually Do Care about what the People are Truly Capable of…

(Thank you too Emma)

I want to help the ANIMALS, BIRDS, etc who are the VICTIMS no one seems to care about…..if anyone knows of a legimate organization who is cleaning and rescuing the birdlife, please email me at scoozi14@att.net. I want to help them. Thank you.

I agree with Maria, the animals need the most help!
I cant believe some people are more worried about the residents and businesses. Its the sea animals that effected here, they cant breath because there is no oxygen in the water they are sufficating, sea turtles, dolphines, sharks, lobster, crap, fish the list goes on. someone please email me info about saving the wild life….not the businesses or the residents.
I am very disappointed with the President regarding this matter.

@kathryn: Non profits provide service and aide when the government and private sector fail to. It’s not about who is responsible, it’s about getting it taken care of as fast as possible. Once that happens, THEN we can worry about who’s responsible for paying for what. Affording the time to figure out the loser of the blame game before taking action is not possible. I hope that helps you understand :-)

thank u , and oil releif fund .com … thank u….

For people who want to help the animals there’s not much the average person can do. I’ve looked at two wildlife rescue places working in Louisiana right now and they can not legally take donations earmarked for helping the animals. All the money for those efforts comes directly from BP. They are legally responsible for footing that bill.

On top of that, from what C.R.O.W. in Sanibel, Florida says people just can’t head to Louisiana and expect to clean up birds. They have to be OSHA certified and trained because they’re working with a toxic substance. I commend people for wanting to help the animals but any money we send to the organizations working with them will only be used for their regular day to day rescue operations.

It’s a shame it has to be this way but for legal reasons it has to be done this way.

Hello, Me and my friend have been planning a community concert to help raise money for the animals effected by the BP oil spill. We were wondering how much of the money goes to helping the animals in this fundraiser?

I am proud on your volunteering work

I wanted to say on Behalf of all the loyal guests and staff at Ernest’s Orleans Restaurant in Shreveport, La. The guests are all doing there part to come in and share some true Louisiana Culture, with food, special sounds of music with Billy J. and Lagniappe, and awesome New Orleans style atmospere. We want to let you know, with most of us having deep roots of the south, we care and want to help! Save our people, Save our state,Save our Culture!
