Education

OVERVIEW

For many years, public schools in New Orleans failed to provide students with the education they needed to grow into healthy, productive citizens. This failure has had devastating effects on individuals and entire communities, with direct implications for crime, the economy, and our very civic identity.

However, there has been a massive reordering of public education in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures. The disaster forced all schools in the city to close for some time. As they began reopening, the city emerged as a proving ground for education reform on a scale never before seen in our nation’s history.

In this environment of unprecedented change, we are working to ensure that reforms do indeed create the public education system that students, their families, and our communities have always deserved — a system that prepares all students to become active citizens and attain good jobs.

We support ongoing public education reform as well as programs that improve the ability of parents and other stakeholders to shape these reforms. By building trust and a shared sense of purpose between school officials, parents, and the community at large, we can sustain reforms and more effectively create a high-functioning public school system.

We believe that every student in our community deserves a quality education at a safe school and the life opportunities such an education brings.
