EDUCATION PROGRAM
In November 2005, the Louisiana Legislature placed 107 of 128 New Orleans’ public schools, historically one of the lowest performing school systems in the country, under the control of the state-run Recovery School District. In short, in 2007, New Orleans has the opportunity to rebuild public education around:
- the rigorous and selective creation of—and ongoing support for—charter schools;
- early childhood education; and
- after-school programming and other out-of-school time programming.
In each of these grant making programs, GNOF is partnering with an expert in the respective field to identify needs and opportunities in each area, as well as to design a competitive grantmaking program that will establish outcome-driven approach to our grant making. We have high hopes that this strategy and leadership will give New Orleans and GNOF the best opportunity to create measurable change for children. Finally, we are optimistic that investing in New Orleans public education will prove to be compelling for national interests. It’s an unprecedented opportunity to create a new national model for reforming failed urban school districts.

Philanthropic Opportunities in Public Education
To learn more about FSG, please see their website: http://www.fsg-impact.org/. While all of the opportunities and organizations presented were vetted by FSG, it is important to note that the list is NOT comprehensive. There are aspects of the education landscape FSG did not analyze including mental health, before and after school programs and others. If an organization is not listed, it does not mean that it was filtered out. There are many worthy organizations doing terrific work in New Orleans that are not included in this report. Additionally, the landscape is constantly changing, so new organizations are emerging that also may not be included in this report. If you have any questions about the report, would like to receive more information, or would like to be connected to any of the organizations or funding opportunities listed, please contact Judith Lozano at The Greater New Orleans Foundation at judith@gnof.org. | |
