Kellogg Foundation and GNOF Partner for Children

Nobel Prize winner and writer Pearl S. Buck said, “If our American way of life fails the child, it fails us all.”  This philosophy is echoed in a partnership recently formed between the Michigan-based W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Greater New Orleans Foundation. Over the next three years, the two foundations will work to improve the quality of life for children in the Greater New Orleans area, particularly for vulnerable children aged 0 – 8 years.

“One of the reasons the Kellogg Foundation is investing in New Orleans is because civic engagement is at an all time high,” said Albert Ruesga, president and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. “There is a great momentum in this community for making positive change,  and there is no better place to begin than by investing in our children.”

The Greater New Orleans Foundation will identify and partner with strong nonprofits that are advocating for at-risk children and their families. “We’re honored to be Kellogg’s on the ground trusted resource,” said Ellen Lee, vice president of programs at the Greater New Orleans Foundation. “Together we’ll have a tremendous impact.”

The total investment is $1.5 million over the next three years. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to sign-up for the Greater New Orleans Foundation email newsletters to be notified of grantmaking opportunities at www.gnof.org.

GNOF replies: Hi Carol, we are several months from announcing the availability of funding for the Kellogg grant. Please sign up for our e-newsletter to receive the most up-to-date information, http://www.gnof.org/email-newsletter-sign-up/

I would like to state that targeting an “area most marginalized and with the higtest rates of low income residents,” is a lofty goal. However, New Orleans Oral School is a small non-profit school located in Metairie, (not a marginalized area). We serve 13 parishes including Orleans and across the river and across the lake. We are in Metairie because it is centralized and relatively easy to get to from all over. We are an early intervention school serving hearing impaired children regardless of race or economic status from 0-6 yrs. We raise funds to help families that need our services so they may attend.
I find targeting an area doesn’t always reach those in need. I will be looking forward to notification of grants for the Kellogg Foundation.

Martha : I am applying for a non-profit catholic parish in Ocean Springs, MS. When you determine requirements please consider the MS Coast who have many New Orleans 2nd residences on the Gulf Coast. 228 875 5233

GNOF replies: Richard, the Kellogg grant will support work in the New Orleans region – GNOF’s service area of 13 parishes. However, most of the funding will be targeted to those areas most marginalized and with the highest rates of low income residents. We are several months from announcing the availability of funding as there is a 3 month planning period.
