Greater New Orleans Foundation Launches Emerging Leaders Program

January 13, 2014 | New Orleans, LA – Today, the Greater New Orleans Foundation announced the launch of Emerging Leaders, a leadership program that seeks to help individuals be better nonprofit managers.

The Foundation is seeking mid-level managers who are currently working at nonprofit human service organizations to participate in the Emerging Leaders program. The selected 20 participants will learn how to manage and supervise people in a multi-cultural setting and learn financial management skills. Funded by the Kresge Foundation in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the program will take place over eight days between May and November. The application can be accessed here.

The program is a component of the Foundation’s Organizational Effectiveness Initiative which is committed to strengthening nonprofit organizations. “One of the best ways to strengthen our local nonprofit organizations is to develop the leadership skills of the individuals working in these organizations,” said Joann Ricci, vice president of Organizational Effectiveness at the Greater New Orleans Foundation.

Partnering with the Foundation in the Emerging Leaders program is CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, a San Francisco-based company with a national reputation in guiding nonprofits to be better managed and more adaptive in order to achieve higher impact.

“It’s our experience that people learn best in learning communities,” said Jeanne Bell, CEO of CompassPoint and co-author of Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability and Financial Leadership for Nonprofit Executives. “When individuals with similar challenges come together, they learn from one another. And, best of all, the networking continues long after the program ends.  This cohort of emerging leaders will have a profound effect on the nonprofits where they work as well as the whole human services sector.”

In 2011, the trustees of the Greater New Orleans Foundation made a commitment to organizational effectiveness, the term used for strengthening nonprofit organizations. To date, the Organizational Effectiveness Initiative at the Foundation has conducted over 100 trainings and workshops for more than 250 nonprofit organizations on such topics as advocacy, board governance, and fundraising.

“The Emerging Leaders program is another way we’re supporting our local nonprofits,” said Albert Ruesga, president and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. “We’re investing today in the individuals who will be running our nonprofits tomorrow.”
