The Selley Foundation
The purpose of The Selley Foundation, a Donor Advised Fund of The Greater New Orleans Foundation, is to improve the lives of people in the greater New Orleans area. An advisory committee reviews grant requests in the following program areas: education, culture and environment.
The Foundation only supports nonprofits with capital needs serving the metropolitan New Orleans area. In the area of education, the fund will support capital items and special programs for higher learning institutions and high schools with a record of excellence. In the area of culture, the fund will support organizations that strive for excellence in the arts. In the area of environment, program support for organizations will be considered.
In general the Selley Foundation does not make grants to support annual operating funds or budgets, special events or fundraising benefits, athletic equipment, publically funded organizations and religious purposes.
How to Apply
The Selley Foundation has a two-step application process, and all submissions are to be done electronically using the Southern Grantmakers Forum Application Form / The Selley Foundation Grant Proposal Summary Sheet, which can be accessed here [download word document].
- The first step is to access the Southern Grantmakers Forum Application Form and complete and submit “The Selley Foundation Grant Proposal Summary Sheet” only.
- In the second step, upon review of “The Selley Foundation Grant Proposal Summary Sheet,” a limited number of applicants will then be invited to submit a full proposal. All full proposals should follow the Southern Grantmakers Forum Application Form guidelines including all attachments. Capital requests must follow the capital request application guidelines. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Submit all grantmaking material to grants@gnof.org.
When to Apply
Proposals should be submitted to grants@gnof.org by 5:00 p.m. on the date due. If the due date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on the following Monday. Faxed applications are not accepted.

August 1, 2012
- Preliminary proposal considered by the Selley board: September 2012

Generally, an organization should wait 12 months after it has been awarded a Selley Grant before reapplying for funding. The Selley Foundation is unlikely to consider more than one full proposal from an organization within a 12-month period. However, organizations who submit preliminary grantmaking information and who are not invited to submit a full proposal are welcome to reapply during any grantmaking cycle, but are encouraged to talk to Foundation staff about the practicality of a new funding request.

do you give out grats to Mississippi
Dear Tyrone -
Thank you for your comment. Mississippi is outside of our service region. We serve the 13 parishes of the Greater New Orleans area: Assumption, Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, and Washington.

Robbie,
Please submit your application without the status certification form. If it is required, we will follow up with you. Thank you.
We are planning to submit a Capital Request to The Selley Foundation. Would it be permissible for us to submit 8 1/2 x 11 drawings of the floor plans as attachments. If so would they count as part of the 3 pages allowed for the narrative? Thanks
Robbie,
Please feel free to attach drawing plans to your capital request application. It will be in addition to your 3 pages.
Does the April 5 deadline apply for 2011 or has a new deadline been established for 2011? Thank you.
Sherah,
When the Selley Fund re-opens on March 1, the website will be updated with this year’s dates. Most likely, this year’s dates will not be too different from last year’s. Please check back with the website in the beginning of March.
Hello, your most recent Email newsletter states that the Selley Foundation Grant opens March 1, 2011. Yet the link doesn’t seem to be current. Will the next deadline be April 5th? Thanks.
Claudia,
The website will be updated once the grant opens on March 1 of this year. The Selley Foundation has two grant cycles, one in May and another in November. Please check back with the website when the grant re-opens.
I am president of a non-profit known as, Crazy ‘Bout History. We were formed three years ago to help keep our history alive. We do this by performing at schools, libraries and luncheons. By using visuals and by performing as people from our past, we enjoy bringing history to life. Does the Selley Foundation help with such programs? More information can be found on our website http://www.crazybouthistoryinc.org
Hi Connie:
The Selley Foundation does make educational grants within specific parameters. The Fund supports special programs and educational equipment for higher learning institutions and in special circumstances, high schools. You can read the full qualifications for Selley Fund grants on the Selley page, here: http://www.gnof.org/apply-for-a-grant/the-selley-foundation/
Hi,
I noticed that a question was asked about an afterschool art program. I have an afterschool educational program for at-risk youth which focuses on children suffering from behavioral disorders who are underachieving at school due to the disorder. Would this be fundable?
Hi, my name is Dana Reed and I am the director of Kid’s Play NOLA, a satelite program of Hope Stone INC in Texas. Does your foundation support after-school programs geared towards art education?
Do you fund Adult Reading and Job Readiness projects. If so, are instructor stipends, books and materials included in the funding? If not, what do you fund and what is the average award?
Michele,
Selley does not fund adult reading or job readiness projects. Selley grants can typically range from $5,000 to $50,000. Selley funds nonprofit organizations involved in education, the arts, and the environment.
What is the funding cycle for the October deadline; do activities have to fall within a certain time-frame?
GNOF replies: In general, grant periods last one full year, therefore the grant activities should be executed sometime between November 2010 – November 2011.
Hi,
Will there be a Fall cycle for the Selley Foundation grant? If so, is the deadline still October 1? Thanks.
GNOF replies: Hi Bonnie, There will be a fall funding cycle for the Selley Foundation fund. We will post the request for proposals in early September, and the deadline will be in mid-October. Please sign up for our e-newsletter to receive up-to-date announcements about all our grant cycles.
GNOF replies: Namugerwa, while the Selley Foundation grants are limited to the metropolitan New Orleans area, we do offer other grant opportunities for nonprofits located outside the metropolitan New Orleans area, including the Norco Community Fund, Cox Charities Fund, Exxon Mobil Fund, Environmental Fund, and the Community IMPACT Program. Please check our website and sign up for our newsletter for up-to-date information on all of our grant opportunities.
Why is it that organizations that are in the Greater Orleans are not sponsored by your programs?
Hi, the Louisiana Green Corps, a project of three collaborative non-profit organizations in the GNO Area, is interested in applying for a Selley grant. I am curious if there are further budgetary guidelines? Are program salaries an allowable request? Thanks!
GNOF replies: Suzy, the Selley Foundation makes grants to fund capital projects in education, the arts, and the environment. Program salaries are not funded.
Thanks for the response. Can you please confirm the deadline? It says April 5, but your January 19 & 20 email says April 1.
GNOF replies: Bonnie, the original date was April 1, 2010, but it has been extended to April 5, 2010.
My Leadership committee project is to build a Wellness Walk concrete walking path for clients of STARC (St. Tammany Assoc of Retarded Citizens), which is a 501(c)(3). The path would enable clients a means of getting exercise and also help in training for Special Olympics. We have obtained contributions of materials but are still looking for financial assistance for the path. Is this something that might qualify for a Selley Foundation grant? Thanks for your time.
GNOF replies: Renee, the Selley Foundation grant recipients must be located in the Metropolitan New Orleans area, so unfortunately your organization would not be able to considered for funding.
Hi,
I am working for a local organization that would like to apply for a Selley grant. I noticed that the guidelines no longer require that the organization be affiliated with United Way. Is that correct? I also noticed that an earlier response stated that the application is due April 1 although the stated date is April 5? Is your office open on April 5? Thank you.
GNOF replies:
Bonnie,
Selley does not require the organization to be affiliated with United Way. GNOF’s offices will be open on Monday, April 5th from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
The Bayou Country Children’s Museum would like to apply for funding. While the museum will not be located in metro New Orleans, it will be a regional, hands-on children’s museum focusing on the Cajun culture and serving the children/families of South Louisiana. Must grant recipients be located in metro New Orleans, or would be we considered because we would serve metro New Orleans?
Do you know yet if April 1, 2010 will be the next Selley Foundation application deadline? Thank you.
GNOF replies: Anne, the answer is yes. April 1, 2010 is the next Selley Foundation application deadline.
Will you consider grant applications from St Tammany Parish?
GNOF Replies: Anne, although funding typically goes to Orleans and Jefferson Parish organizations, The Selley Foundation is open to learning about new organizations working within their funding priorities: arts/culture, education and environment. Please feel free to apply for the next available grant. The deadline will be April 1, 2010.
What will be your next deadline for funding applications for 2010?
GNOF replies:
Kathy,
We have not set our 2010 grantmaking calendar. Please feel free to contact Amy Forsyth, Grants Administrator, for additional information pertaining to the rest of the 2009 grantmaking opportunities.
We are a Start Up Organization. We have our DUNS and EIN available, but We are working on the 501(c)(3) as of now. Do the Selley Foundation support Start up Organization.
Gnof Replies: Ms. Read, The Selley Foundation is eager to learn about any organization working within their funding priorities: arts/culture, education and environment. However, you must have your 501(c)(3) to be considered.
Where can I view a list of former Selley Foundation awards & amounts?
GNOF Replies: RS Belair, The Selley Foundation has requested not to publicize their grants. However, grants range from $5,000.00 to 50,000.00. Also, proposals can be delivered to our offices at 1055 St. Charles Avenue Suite 100, New Orleans, LA 70130.
Do you accept hand delivered proposals?
Where can we access the Southern Grantmakers application forum? A google search did not turn up any results.
GNOF Replies: Jennifer, The Southern Grantmakers Application will be posted on the website by the end of September 17, 2009.

Hi, Tracey. Unfortunately, the Foundation doesn’t support individuals. We support 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving the Greater New Orleans area. Have you asked staff at the college about scholarship oppotunities they might have available?
